Bob Nugent Remembered

Posted Wednesday, September 12, 2007 by Gridiron Club
This past June, our community lost a dear friend, Mr. Robert Nugent. Mr. Nugent served our School district in many capacities. He taught Health & Phys Ed. for over 35 years. He served as the Head Track and Field Coach from 1974-1997, and was a member of the Football coaching staff in the early 70?s. For many a Warrior, Mr. Nugent was a source of motivation, as he instilled in his students the values of hard work, dedication, pride, and most importantly attitude. Mr. Nugent was a 1966 Graduate of Salamanca High School.

During his time here as a student, he was a standout athlete in football and track & Field. He was a 3-year Varsity letter winner on the football team, and was an instrumental player on the 1964 and 1965 teams which had an unparalleled 16 game unbeaten streak. In 1965 he was named the Big 30 Player of the Year. He was the first Salamanca Football player to receive this honor, and is one of only 6 players from our school to have received the award in its history. At the time Mr. Nugent played football here at Salamanca, All-State Players were not yet recognized. However, it is evident that Mr. Nugent played at a level that would have warranted this distinction. Following high school, Mr. Nugent continued his football career at Brockport State University where he was an exceptional running back and punter.

Mr. Nugent's jersey will now hang in honor of him where it deservedly belongs, in the hallways of Salamanca High School with the other great Warriors who have excelled and achieved great feats in Salamanca's athletics history.

In closing, we would like to leave you with a few words that Mr. Nugent left with us, which represent the attitude and values of our dear friend and mentor...

I'm not judged by the number of times that I have failed, but by the number of times that I have succeeded... BUT the number of times that I have succeeded is in direct proportion to the number of times I have failed, got back up, and tried again. Don't Quit!
